Abstract Starting from the history of textiles in the Oriental world, the a. explains how the stonemasons that carved the mythic figurations of Romanesque churches were inspired by Sasanian images seen in clothes. Along with the textiles, also ideas circulated all over. And there is a story that had a great popular consent in Islām: the account of Muhammad's "night journey" to Heaven and Hell, as described in Kitāb al-miʿrāğ, a text that shows clear Iranian influences and has actively interfered with Medieval culture. Reading al-Burāq, a kind of winged horse, and led by the Archangel Gabriel, Muhammad visits the afterlife worlds: he ascends to the Heavens looking at the Planetary Angels. The a. identifies the origins and developments of these themes in Iranian-Gnostic lore and in the so-called "Orphic gold tablets".
