Abstract It might be fruitful to seek a genealogical link between the Decalogue and the Human Rights; one can also feel a real dissonance between the two texts, especially if one observes the way in which they are used today as a fundamental reference. The article offers an analysis of each of the two texts: the Ten Words and the Declaration of the Human Rights of 1789, their disposition and their structure. The comparison allows some reflections on the status of the subject addressed by each of these texts, on the different way to posit the principle of freedom of this subject. Each of these fundamental texts does not work in the same way within the humanitarian organizations which refer to it.
