Abstract The A. thinks that the main theological root of the Shoah lies in considering as either unnecessary or impertinent any contribution of the Jewish religion after Christ. He describes five modes of a Christian approach to Judaism which he does not deem sufficient to remove this error. Turning to biblical hermeneutics, he then denounces the danger of various patterns of fulfilment, opposition or substitution, which are still resorted to in order to explain the relationship between the New and the Old Testament. Finally he suggests, as a counter-proposal, a irreducible complementarity, which expresses the topical relevance of the Jewish reading of the Bible, without denying the legitimacy of a christological approach.
