Abstract Modern migration phenomena give way to closer relations among individuals, cultures and different groups. This means that we must learn to live with each other, by interacting and aiming to reciprocal understanding. In pedagogy this goal is reached through an educational need to respect different identities and encourage a dialogue between different cultures. These reasons encourage us to face intercultural pedagogy competences and research fields. As it emerges from the current debate on pedagogical research, intercultural dimensions are not optional; on the contrary, they constitute a necessity, if we are not to rule out those intercultural dynamics and challenges so peculiar of our time.
