Abstract The goal of this work is to contribute to the dialogue on the theory of communicative action (Habermas 1997) examined as a theoretical context for the emancipatory aspect of learning, or transformative learning (Mezirow 2003). This work originated as the theoretical framework for a doctoral thesis in the field of sociology of culture on the topic of identity conversion: transformative learning theories indeed constitute a useful explanatory perspective for the formative aspects of conversion events. The reflective attitude which originates in response to stress caused by a disorienting dilemma, becomes an indispensable prerequisite for confronting the challenges of social everyday reality which is characterized by complexity and pluralism where the individual must be open to 'continuous conversion' (Berger e Luckmann 1997). Beginning with socially acquired frames of reference, the individual undertakes a search for meaning, searching for the real Self en s'engageant (Larmore 2006) in view of an 'attractor' that, whatever it may be, becomes the polar star of every existential voyage.
