Abstract This study aims at shedding light on the extent to which religion furthers the social integration in secular society, from a civil rights perspective, of people from different traditions and cultures. It seeks to advance a theory of religion's role in the process of social integration in a society whose very core is the separation of religion and state, religious freedom and other civil rights. After clarifying the models of interreligious interaction and the possibile strategies for social integration, the authors proceed to address two empirical research questions: to what extent do young people, namely, the higher secondary school students in Tamilnadu, India, who comprise the sample, support a lived legal culture of civil rights (part one), and what effects do their religious beliefs and practices have on such a civil rights culture, with reference for some relevant population characteristics (part two)? The article ends with a discussion on the salient findings emerging from the empirical analysis with regard to the impact of religion on social integration.
