Abstract The aim of this paper is to outline a ?liberal? perspective in Voltaire's Trait? sur la tolerance on the topic of the religious tolerance against political Theology and the use and misuse of God's name. The study will compare the deist author of the Trait? with Christian apologists of the first four centuries, before Christianity had become the only legitimate religion in the Roman Empire. The article will also connect Voltaire with Augustine's liberal thought, re-read in the light of the abandonment of the theocratic model which developed in the Middle Ages. Thus, Voltaire gets close to the Early Christian thinkers by dissociating religion from coercion.
