Abstract The article examines the thought and experience of the Italian Jesuit De Nobili from a theological point of view. What emerges is a controversial person, who while being open to cultural adaptation in language and behaviour, was faithful to the typically Thomistic and Tridentine theological principles of his time. This did not stop De Nobili from seeking new ways to make it easier to find God. While on the one hand his critical theology concentrated on idolatry and the concept of avatars, on the other hand his missionary zeal, his intellectual openness and his ability to adapt to different cultures, brought him to define new concepts which facilitated an understanding of Christian revelation. Particularly inspiring is the concept of Divine guru, which allowed De Nobili, in his Christology, to present Christ using cultural categories rooted in the place where he lived.
