| Abstract | Part of the cultural and literary legacy of the Yemenite Jews is a so-called "Writ of Protection" (dimmat an-nabi),which is viewed as a document that the Prophet Muhammad himself had issued in favour of the Jews of Yemen. Until today, however, neither date nor context of its origin are clear nor its historical core. Neverthless, down to the 20th century this "Writ of Protection" has been transmitted in a number manuscripts, in versions differing from each other, of which thus far few manuscripts only have been edited. Two of these thus far unedited versions of the "Writ of Protection" - i.e. the Judaeo-Arabic manuscripts Ms. heb. no. 5026 and Ms. heb. no. 0392 of the Krupp Collection (Jerusalem) - are presented in the following article together with introduction, translation, and commentary. |
