Abstract There is no majority religion in China. Atheism is the dominant ideology of the political ?lite. All of the major religions - Christianity, Buddhism and Islam - are minorities in terms of the numbers of believers and social status. There are 55 ethnic minorities by the Chinese official definition. Religious and ethnics minorities are intertwined to form a complex reality with changing dynamics of religion-state relations.
