Abstract This study involves an analysis of the Qur'an?s method of argumentation. The Qur'an, which seeks the conversion of its audience to faith in its God and its prophet, alludes frequently to divine threats not only to punish His enemies but also to lead them to that punishment through deception and the ?sealing of hearts?. These allusions suggest that the text of the Qur'an has a fundamentally paranetic character, even if the Mu'tazilites, who inclined towards rationalism, sought to find theological coherence in the Qur'anic text. This conclusion is not far from the ideas of Muḥammad Aḥmad Ḫalafallāh, whose doctoral thesis caused a controversy in Egypt in the middle of the twentieth century.
