Abstract In order to identify the main traits of an Ignatian style of dialogue with Islam we look into the life of Saint Ignatius. The 16th century European society was marked by a sense of cultural superiority over Islam together with a fear of the Ottoman Empire?s threat to Christian Europe. Ignatius of Loyola while sharing these views was also influenced by other elements: the Franciscan tradition, a late medieval crusader spirit, a call to human proximity and a call to an adaptive approach to Islam. When integrating these elements in an integral understanding of Ignatian spirituality we find an interesting proposal to approach Islamic-Christian dialogue. The characteristics of this approach are a strong sense of universal mission and a strong call to help the souls.
