Abstract In this article the author attempts to re-read the Bible hermeneutically in the light of a Dalits' assertion. The slavery and the oppressions of the Old Testament are used as a fertile ground on which the search of a Dalit liberative praxis can be sufficiently implanted. In this venture, three ways are specifically taken into consideration. The first is to situate the oppression and slavery of the Israelites in a hermeneutical context parallel to that of the Dalits. Within this context, we can try to see an original setting of the Dalits and find a meaningful message. The second is to appropriate the interpretative keys or roots available within the Old Testament, so as to discover their liberation potential in the service of Dalit liberation. Thirdly, on the basis of faith and on the dimension of empowerment, we will try to find a contextual approach to the Dalit issues. This will be achieved by considering together some of the major characteristics found in the Old Testament.
