Abstract Starting from a survey of the Brazilian religious field based on the last demographic census carried out in 2010, the results achieved in the analysis of Brazilian society are confirmed for the a. by the sentence referring to Catholicism lived south of the equator, which, paradoxically, states: "There are many religions in this religion". A lesson that comes from literature when it is remembered, as does the character of Tartarana in Grande sertao veredas, that: "Many religions, boy. I do not miss occasions of religion. Take advantage of all of them. I drink the water of every river ... Only one is not enough for me, maybe it does not even reach me". The Brazilian case is proposed as an example to express the vital dynamics of religious syncretism. What for many is a sign of a strange or superstitious thing, is experienced as a singular way of widening the chains of protection. A new aspect of Christianity appears or even an "unedited image of being a Christian". The experience of being hosted by the others causes substantial changes in the world of identity, revealing innovative features in the way of being religious.
