| Abstract | In the past few decades, Prato (Tuscany) has become the city with the highest concentration of Chinese national residents in all of Europe ; the most prevalent stereotypes tend to describe these Chinese immigrants as relentless workers, especially having a tendency to not respect national laws on labor and immigration in order to maximize their profits. In reality not only are these stereotypes often misleading, but also, after many years of living in the city, the Chinese have been developing many interests and needs that move away from the economic ones, such as the need to practice their religious faith. The Chinese buddhist temple in prato is only one of the many symbols of the diversity within the Chinese migrated group. This article retraces the path that brought the inauguration of the temple and analyzes its social ‘function’, both within the city and within the Chinese communities. |
