| Abstract | This study examines debated expression יהוה צבאות. Our investigation develops through the linguistic and morphological analysis and the study of the occurrences in the Hebrew Bible. The divine title YHWH sb'wt «Lord of hosts» presents some difficulties of interpretation in terms of historical and religious views. What is the nature of the hosts at the service of the ruler of the sky? The first element to consider is that this is certainly primitive epiclesis. The expression has had linguistic evolution. The cults of the neighboring peoples and the birth of monotheism are certain factors in the use of the expression. Origin, and beyond the more religious applications of this formula in the context of the biblical tradition reveal, these «hosts» were the celestial beings, the stars, the gods of neighboring peoples, moreover it was a cosmic-dynamic conception. |
