Abstract It is no longer unusual for Christians to practice Zen. But does this practice allow for a theological foundation? And, given such a foundation, would this entail a preferred form of Christian reception of Zen? This essay explores the twofold question and argues that a refl ected Christian adoption of Eastern forms of meditation offers the Church the possibility to grow more deeply into the fullness of divine truth (cf. Jn 16:13) and thereby also to grow into the promised fullness of catholicity. Drawing upon a document worked out by the Monastic Interreligious Dialogue and articulated in an up to now little known text of the Pontifi cal Council for Interreligious Dialogue, a proposal will be made that avoids the dual strategies of assimilation and synthesis, and, in their place, will promote the formation of a truly dialogical spirituality.
