Abstract In this article, we aim to think in the perspective of Flįvio Pierucci (1945-2012) to discuss the sociology of religion unfolding in contemporary Brazil. The debate around the theory of secularization is taken as one of the narrative threads. The article focuses on four main themes from this debate: decline of Catholicism, detraditionalization, disenchantment of the world, and intersections between the religious and political spheres. Analyzing these arguments not only informs greater understanding of the sociology of religion in Brazil, but also the transformations that the academic field of religion in Brazil has undergone in recent decades.
