Abstract In Chinese Buddhism, silence is an integral part of monastic customs and duties, and as such it is codified amd regulated in canonical literature (be it in translation from Indian languages or in Chinese compositions), in dedicated documents of specific schools, and in the regulations of individual monasteries. The present contribution analyzes forms of silence treated within this vast and varied textual corpus, and examines what we can learn from this about the underlying religious tradition.
