Abstract Investigating the life in different Daoist temples in Shaanxi and Peking today from a social anthropological standpoint, this article questions the way these monasteries can be both noisy and seeking quietude places. They are often busy and cacophonous, especially on festival days. The "warm and noisy" ambiance shows the vitality of the temple. But Daoist monasteries are also peaceful. Rituals request to stop talking to each other. Teachings ideally not involve words but occur through imitation. Moreover, the Daoist quest aims to reach a state of inner stillness. An anthropology of silence leads to study how Daoist monks sparingly speak to save their vital energy and how some of them avoid speaking at all, as a temporary stage in the self-cultivation process.
