| Abstract | The Vimalakirtīnirdeśasūtra has been extraordinarily popular in China over the centuries. The protagonist and the mouthpiece for Mahāyāna propaganda is Vimalakīrti, an enigmatic lay hero whose decision to remain silent during the famous debate that forms the centrepiece of the work has become legendary. The paper re-examines studies concerning the origins of the iconography that developed in China during the medieval period, suggesting an alternative view based on a close analysis of the attributes that have been emphasized in portraying vimalakīrti and the details adopted in evoking his silence. |
