Abstract In this paper, the language of silence is examined in the light of the spiritual and esoteric doctrine of medieval Sufism. A particular attention is devoted to the thought of the muslim mystic 'Izz al-Dīn al-Muqaddasî, who lived in the 13th century of the Christian era, as well as to his famous work entitled Kitâb Kashf al-Asrâr 'an Hukm al-Tuyûr wa'l-Azhâr ("The book of the Unveiling of the Ontological Condition of Birds and Flowers"), which can be regarded, without any doubt, as one of the best expressions of Arabic allegorical literature.
