Abstract In 2006, in Madurai, India, there was the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Roberto De Nobili. His arrival marked the beginning of an experience deeply influencing the Church's history in India. This phenomenon was part of a wider movement that, in the name of adaptation, had major repercussions for other Asian countries and was under the guidance of Alessandro Valignano, the Society of Jesus' Provincial Visitor in Asia, as well as its Provincial in India. De Nobili's experience not only brought a new pastoral and socio-cultural approach, but it aroused debate and conflict within the Church and the Society of Jesus itself. What he did, however, remains a highly significant moment and a forerunner of things to come in the way Christ is proclaimed in non Judeo-Christian cultures far from the Mediterranean basin. His method and what happened to him is still the object of profound discussion and study.
