Abstract Prayer is a reality that permeates the consciences and attitudes of the majority of Muslims. Without the slightest variation or change, five ritual prayers daily call the soul to unite itself to God with full awareness of his unity and oneness, and with recognition of the Prophet's election as his messenger and prophet. Carried out in a state of ritual purity and identification with the dictates of revelation and the words of tradition, these canonical prayers give witness to God's universal lordship, most especially through the act of prostation. These prayers are accompanied by a rich resource of supererogatory prayers, which find their maximum expression in the practice of dhikr, or remembrance of the most beautiful names of Allah, the pure exaltation of his supreme Name. Widespread among Muslims, this practice, among others, characterizes the experience of the various ascetic and mystic groups that constitute the kaleidoscope of Islamic spirituality of every age and place.
