Abstract From the guidelines of the Second Vatican Council, as well as from the new world situation, ?dialogue? emerges as a new way of mission. The key to understanding the teaching and the practical choices made by the Council is the encyclical Ecclesiam suam, in which Pope Paul VI gave the indication that allowed the Council to find out its ?point of cohesion?. Within the broader perspective of dialogue as a way of life and action of the Church in the world, the essay focuses on the absolute novelty represented by the dialogue with non-Christian religions, establishing some essential distinctions between interreligious dialogue and theology of religions, and between dialogue and mission. Although the dialogue must become the main mode of exercising mission, this last cannot be reduced to ?only dialogue?. In the directives given by the Council, as well as by the post-conciliar magisterium, there is a clear statement of the necessity both to dialogue with the followers of other religions, and to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all nations, including the followers of other religions. The Author concludes with a strong call for formation to dialogue?, that is now an absolute necessity for every Christian, especially for those who have a specific missionary vocation.
