Abstract The contribution puts in comparison the Second Vatican Council's approach to mission, especially as it is thematized in the decree Ad gentes (AG), with the reflection that has been developed in the ecumenical journey. In particular, it seeks to understand what shifts of emphasis and balance, concerning the idea of mission, have been favoured by the Catholic partecipation in the ecumenical movement. AG shows two peculiarities with respect to the ecumenical position of its time: it maintains the distinction between evangelization and Church implantation. Reconciling this approach with the missionary nature of the whole Church will be one of the greatest efforts of the post-Council period. On the other hand, the setting of AG, seeing the Church as the ?universal sacrament of salvation?, gives more evidence to the ecclesiality of mission. The Council also recognizes a relationship of mutual exchange between the church and the world (GS 44), but the focus of AG on the announcement of Christ to non-Christians leaves in the background the secular perspective of salvation. Other steps of the ecumenical journey on which Catholic theology and the magisterium are called to confront are those of the ?broader? ecumenism ? the interreligious and cross-cultural one ? that refers to the pneumatological dimension for an understanding and practice that is liberating and mission-promoting.
