Abstract In the Gospel of John, as in the whole New Testament, there is no word meaning what we call ?mission?. This last is recalled by the term testimony, which is an essential key to understand the entire fourth gospel. The evangelist comprehends his own self as a witness (ho martyr?n), and his book as a martyria. In the Gospel there is an intrinsical link between the Spirit and the witness: without the Spirit there is neither testimony, nor teaching, nor memory. Witness, teaching, memory are three complementary ways to indicate the Gospel according to John: it is a testimony addressed to the entire ecumene (titulus crucis): it is a teaching that reaches the Greeks; it is a memory of the events of Jesus, written in Greek, the common language of the time. The Johannine community has come to perceive the universal destination of the testimony in its own history, many traits of which we still ignore. We see, however, decisive experiences among the Samaritans and the Greeks. There was not a mission of the Pauline type, but rather a getting into contact, open-mindedly, with other societies. Therefore, this ?open? history is the place where the Johannine community perceived more fully the truth of Jesus, the Incarnate Logos. If it is the Spirit who leads into all truth, he is not extraneous to the acquisitions that are achieved within history.
