Abstract The Pentecostal movement began in the early twentieth century and showed, according to a shared sociological interpretation, three waves. In the nascent stage, small groups surrounded charismatic leaders. Then the independent Pentecostal churches were born. Finally, a process of institutionalization pushed not to the creation of new churches, but to networking of followers' groups, a swarm of many ecclesiolae, with an organizational apparatus that is simple and powerful at the same time. Thus, neo-Pentecostalism is more and more enclosed in a formula: feeling is believing. The belief must inflame the senses. Therefore it needs to create sensational events within non-conventional liturgical spaces, using means of mass communication with confidence and skill. It is difficult to estimate the numerical strength of the Pentecostal and charismatic movements, ranging from estimates of 350 million followers to at least one quarter of the 2 billion Christians in the world. It is estimated, however, that in 2025 Christians will be 2,6 billion, and that the majority of them will live in Africa, Latin America and Asia. It seems that a post-colonial Christianity, proud of its native features, will be preponderant.Neo-Pentecostalism thus poses a great cultural and religious challenge to the old continent and to the historical Christian churches.
