Abstract Starting from Jean-Claude V?der's work on Mauritius Island, the Author presents again the ?intercultural inculturation?, that unlike ?monocultural? inculturation takes into account all the perspectives which are present in the environment where the Gospel is announced. If monocultural inculturation tends to harmonize the different contexts, assuming only what can be adapted to one's own culture, intercultural inculturation starts from the principle of respect for alterity. It assumes otherness positively, honouring every spiritual richness, even when one's own traditions and customs are strange to it. Applying this concept to liturgy, we discover that the liturgical action itself, in its material and perceptible faithfulness, can constitute the highest and most privileged place to realize that understanding and exchange, which enable the cultures to coexist without fearing to be reduced to each other. This does not bring to ?liturgical? relativism, but helps to understand that the rite cannot be considered only a sign, but rather it carries out an essential task of ?cultural initiation?, as an insuperable and necessary way to disclose entire worlds of belief and faith.
