Abstract About twenty years ago, the Group of Research on Islam was founded in Padua, as part of the Diocesan Commission for Ecumenism and dialogue. In October 2001, the Group was replaced by the Diocesan Service for Christian-Islamic Relations, in order to accentuate the relations with the Muslim community in a pastoral key. The Service addressed primarily the ecclesial communities, but also the schools and the civil society to provide tools, aids, opportunities for interaction, debate and evangelization, making use of the reflection and experience of many people who every day meet Muslims in the spheres of culture, law, social issues, migration and charity. In May 2008, the diocese of Padua published the Note 'A contribution of the Church of Padua to the reflection on Muslim places of worship',in the middle of a debate on one of the two large prayer halls in the city. As well as with civil society, the Service is committed to working with the Muslims themselves, with their different groups and cultural centres. The ecclesial community today is called to an unusual and unexpected ?pastoral care? toward Muslim believers. Questions of a different kind are added to the traditional duties, in front of which we are all unprepared and for which we are still studying, researching, experimenting and discerning.
