Abstract This paper aims to introduce to a topic, which has been discussed very often regarding ancient Pagan art, but until now never in an exhaustive way regarding Early Christian art. The author presents some preliminary reflections about the representation of the Other in Early Christian Art and written sources, and their importance for the representation of Christian self-identity as a hypothetic delimitation from the Pagan and Jewish components of the Ancient society and artistic production. Besides, the discussion of the example of the Phrygian cap ? used by Early Christian artists e.g. for the representation of the Magi ? should help to decipher the way Christian artists selected and borrowed elements from the Roman Pagan artistic repertory. An essential bibliography shows the present status quo of research regarding the Other from the Early Christian point of view.
