Abstract In recent years there has been much talk about the emergence of India as an international superpower, spurred especially by the country's remarkable economic growth. The present article is envisaged as a critical reality-check on contemporary India, with the aim of charting a bold vision for the nation's future. The author begins by enumerating some of the major challenges facing India today on the development, societal and ecological fronts. After a brief presentation of each of these challenges, he articulates a response in terms of a vision for an equitable, inclusive and sustainable future. He argues that in the task of nation-building, India is called upon to make a unique journey, by drawing from it's own millennial cultural and religious ethos and traditions, and by the collective effort of civil society in which youth are to play an important part. In realizing the dream of a society based on equity, inclusion and sustainability, India has the capacity to become a true beacon of hope for the whole humanity.
