Abstract The article presents a study on chieftaincy titles and how it affects growth, tolerance, cohesion and understanding among Christians and Muslims in Yorubaland (Nigeria, Africa). The author discusses chieftaincy title as used by Yoruba Muslim following Islamic doctrine, by traditional Yoruba people, and by Yoruba Christians. The significance of chieftaincy title in Christian culture and how it is taken by African adherents are also presented.
